Policies for student community engagement during the pandemic
-
During the pandemic, students may do their community engagement from home. This can take several forms:
-
With parent permission (directly between the parent and student - no Poly permission slip will be provided), students may make virtual, direct connections via Zoom, Facebook, videos, and phone calls with people associated with community organizations for the purposes of tutoring, community building, interviews, leading or participating in educational activities, and attending community meetings.
-
With parent permission (directly between the parent and student - no Poly permission slip will be provided), students may record themselves reading, singing, performing music for community organizations such as pre-K through elementary schools and senior citizen centers. Students may share those recordings directly with the organizations that have requested them.
-
Zoom and other video meetings between older and younger Poly students are allowed for tutoring, virtual babysitting, and other fun activities as a way to build community and support for one another. Parents of both parties should be informed in advance of these meetings. No Poly adult will be attending these meetings, but Ms. Larios can help coordinate initial meetings and contact parents.
-
Making and/or collecting things at home to be donated to people and community organizations. Examples of these projects are masks, arts, crafts, letters, food items, items that are used but in good condition collection drives, etc. Several organizations have sent out lists of items they need donated. That said, please keep in mind that fundraising for third-party organizations is not allowed for community engagement.

With parent permission (directly between the parent and student - no Poly permission slip will be provided), students may do socially-distanced, masked, gloved in-person community engagement activities to which Poly’s community partners have invited students’ participation. These events will be advertised to parents and students for the family to decide upon their comfort level with this kind of direct participation. These are not required activities. All contact, signups, and registration for these events should be made directly between the family and the organization, whose contact info will be provided.
